If you are reading this post as part of a search for help for yourself or a loved one, you have probably come across many sites that have wonderful photos and tout the best drug and alcohol treatment available at the best prices.

The intent of this article isn’t to disparage the many programs out there who offer truly amazing treatment experiences for their clients. I hope to educate you briefly on some important components of a good treatment center. In my opinion, here are the few key components to consider as you look for the best drug rehabs:

1. Program Philosophy – I consider the 12 step approach to be the most comprehensive in addressing the underlying issues in the life of an addict/alcoholic. It is a program for living that allows a person to get right with themselves, their fellow man and their concept of a Higher Power. The best drug rehabs I’m familiar with offer this approach to treatment.

2. Length of Stay – Statistically speaking, the longer a person can stay in a supportive and structured environment, the better their chances for sustainable sobriety. I usually recommend a stay of at least 90 days in treatment. Keep in mind it has to be more that just an educational process. their need to be a life changing experience happen. That usually doesn’t happen in 30 day treatment. If this is not their first time in treatment I would recommend 3-6 months at a minimum in a treatment program. Sometimes a longer stay is needed for the chronically relapsing individual.

3. Dual Diagnosis – Does your loved on have a mental health diagnosis in addition to the issues surrounding their addiction. In some cases the mental health problem predate the addiction and could be the underlying reason for self medication. When sifting through the best drug rehabs for your loved one with a co-occurring disorder, be sure to choose one that addresses these issues, preferably with an integrated approach.

4. Aftercare & Monitoring –  This is becoming a more widely recognized need in the treatment industry.  So often a client will complete treatment and not have a solid aftercare plan or accountability system in place.  The last thing I want for a client is to have them successfully complete treatment only to have them slowly revert back into old behaviors and ultimately relapse.  The best drug rehabs will work hand in hand with the intervention team to ensure that everyone involved has a plan for the clients continued success in their sobriety.
