A common question that comes up during a family’s search for treatment is whether or not to have a coed experience for their loved one or a gender specific treatment experience. While I have heard arguments for both over the years, I favor a gender specific approach. Most long term treatment experiences (90 days or more) will offer this as a program component. While their are some very good coed programs available, most of the time this distraction needs to be eliminated in early recovery.
There is a reason that most 12 step sponsors encourge their protoges to abstain from entering relationship in the first year of sobriety. In our addiction, we obtain our identity through external sources because we lack a real sense of who we are. We can allow ourselves to be defined by the relationships we get into. When we are placed in a recovery program and separated from our drug of choice, our mind immediately seeks other ways to escape the emotional discomfort that is the underlying source of addiciton. One way that many have tried to find this artificial escape is in members of the opposite sex. A gender specific treatment program will offer the addict an opportunity to discover who they truly are while they are engaging in the recovery process.
Until an addict can discover the real causes and conditions underlying the problem they are best served by having as few opportunities for distraction as possible. Freedom Interventions has established relationship with many top programs around the country. We would be more than happy to discuss options with you even if an intervention is not necessary.
